Introduction to Prehistoric Egypt

The prehistoric period in Egypt starts in the Lower Palaeolithic with Acheulean, one of the world’s earliest industries dating to a time before Homo sapiens sapiens existed. All of the main phases of Prehistoric occupation are represented in Egypt, some of it in areas which are now no longer occupied due to differences in the climate at the time.

Occupation was not continuous and there are a number of periods when there was an occupation hiatus. However, these periods are the exception - Egypt was occupied for long periods of time, with distinctive industries which are becoming better understood as more sites are excavated.
